Over half of the world’s nations have committed to reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions in a global effort to prevent disastrous climate change. Most experts agree that greenhouse gases are responsible for increasing atmospheric temperatures and rising sea levels. A warmer climate could trigger more frequent and intense heat waves and other changes in weather patterns, damage and destroy natural habitats, disrupt agriculture, and cause countless weather and heat-related human and wildlife deaths. Rising sea levels may put entire cities, states, and nations under water, consume terrestrial ecosystems, and change the face of the Earth. With over thirty years of decarbonization regulation behind us, the Environmental Wire asks, where do we stand with our climate goals?
Background
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) insulate our planet, trapping the sun’s heat by absorbing thermal radiation in the lower atmosphere. GHGs that significantly contribute to regulating global temperatures include carbon dioxide, fluorinated gases (synthetic hydrofluorocarbons), nitrous oxide, methane, and water vapor. Life on Earth depends on greenhouse gases, without which our planet would freeze and become uninhabitable. As with all good things, however, too much GHG becomes harmful.
The scientific community has identified carbon dioxide (CO₂) as the most dangerous greenhouse gas because it can remain in the air for centuries, lingering for up to a thousand years. CO₂ accounts for the overwhelming majority of human-generated greenhouse gases and is responsible for most temperature increase over Earth’s natural greenhouse baseline. Each methane (CH4) molecule traps significantly more heat than CO₂, yet methane has an atmospheric lifetime of roughly ten years, so it is gone well before CO₂. Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) traps hundreds of times more heat and it lasts over a hundred years, but annual N₂O emissions are measured in millions of tons, whereas CO₂ is measured in billions.
Where We Stand
Over a hundred countries have committed to balancing their greenhouse gas emissions with the removal of carbon dioxide and other contaminants, pledging net zero with target years from 2045 to 2060. Finland set the most ambitious goals, aiming for net zero by 2035 and carbon negative by 2040. More than one hundred nations have targeted net-zero emissions by 2050. China and Russia plan to achieve net zero by 2060, India by 2070. Of the largest polluting countries, only the United States and Iran have no federal net-zero legislation. The long-term worldwide goal is to hold the average global temperature increase to less than 2°C, a limit meant to prevent the most horrific effects of climate change.
With so many countries on board, one could expect us to be well on our way to keeping global warming in check. Unfortunately, almost none of the pledging countries are on course to meet their emission commitments.
However, there are some winners in the climate change arena. In the small Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, with less than a million citizens, the forests absorb three times more carbon than the nation emits. Of all developed countries, Sweden is considered to be the closest to meeting its 2045 net-zero goal. Iceland has the highest renewable energy grid and is therefore well-positioned to reach its 2040 target. Still, the winners are few.
Overall, the world is not on track to meet the 2°C temperature increase limit, let alone the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. When the United Nations first established its temperature goals, scientists predicted a significant risk of increased extreme weather events, irrecoverable loss of ecosystems, the mass extinction of a million species worldwide, and the displacement of hundreds of millions of people. Here we are halfway through 2026, and we are not on course. Can we find a way to steer mankind’s industrial-consumer momentum away from greenhouse gas emissions? Only time will tell.
How Can We Help?
Humans can lower their carbon footprints in many ways. While some of these ideas are still on the horizon, many are being actively pursued. One example of how the world is reducing its carbon emissions is shifting energy generation away from the use of fossil fuels toward low-carbon sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power.
Governments and industries are also working to improve energy efficiency in homes, factories, and infrastructure so that less energy is required to achieve the same output. One way this positive change could be made possible is by requiring better insulation and heat regulation inside homes to lower energy use, as well as the use of more efficient machinery in factories to lower total energy consumption.
Another major effort that is already well underway is the electrification of transportation, including an expansion in the use of electric vehicles and improvements to public transit networks to reduce reliance on gasoline and diesel. Both Laos and Ethiopia have placed bans on gasoline and diesel vehicles to consequently lower fuel consumption. Additionally, many countries are working to protect and restore their aquatic ecosystems and forests that absorb and store carbon dioxide. These ongoing efforts are supported by international climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement of 2015, which has been adopted by 195 countries across the world. The Paris Agreement encourages countries to set emissions reduction targets and is informed by scientific guidance from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
